Power processor design considerations for a solar electric propulsion spacecraft

    Get PDF
Propulsion power processor design options are described. The propulsion power processor generated the regulated dc voltages and currents from a solar array source of a solar electric propelled spacecraft. The power processor consisted of 12 power supplies that provide the regulated voltages and currents necessary to power a 30-cm mercury ion thruster. The design options for processing unregulated solar array power and for generating the regulated power required by each supply are studied. The technical approaches utilized in the developed design and the technological limitation of the identified design options are discussed. Alternate approaches for delivering power to a number of mercury ion thrusters and methods of optimizing are described. It was concluded that this power processor design should be considered for application in solar electric propulsion missions of the future

Mechanically probing coherent tunnelling in a double quantum dot

We study theoretically the interaction between the charge dynamics of a few-electron double quantum dot and a capacitively-coupled AFM cantilever, a setup realized in several recent experiments. We demonstrate that the dot-induced frequency shift and damping of the cantilever can be used as a sensitive probe of coherent inter-dot tunnelling, and that these effects can be used to quantitatively extract both the magnitude of the coherent interdot tunneling and (in some cases) the value of the double-dot T_1 time. We also show how the adiabatic modulation of the double-dot eigenstates by the cantilever motion leads to new effects compared to the single-dot case.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

Dense packing crystal structures of physical tetrahedra

We present a method for discovering dense packings of general convex hard particles and apply it to study the dense packing behavior of a one-parameter family of particles with tetrahedral symmetry representing a deformation of the ideal mathematical tetrahedron into a less ideal, physical, tetrahedron and all the way to the sphere. Thus, we also connect the two well studied problems of sphere packing and tetrahedron packing on a single axis. Our numerical results uncover a rich optimal-packing behavior, compared to that of other continuous families of particles previously studied. We present four structures as candidates for the optimal packing at different values of the parameter, providing an atlas of crystal structures which might be observed in systems of nano-particles with tetrahedral symmetry

Instance Space of the Number Partitioning Problem

Within the replica framework we study analytically the instance space of the number partitioning problem. This classic integer programming problem consists of partitioning a sequence of N positive real numbers \{a_1, a_2,..., a_N} (the instance) into two sets such that the absolute value of the difference of the sums of aja_j over the two sets is minimized. We show that there is an upper bound αcN\alpha_c N to the number of perfect partitions (i.e. partitions for which that difference is zero) and characterize the statistical properties of the instances for which those partitions exist. In particular, in the case that the two sets have the same cardinality (balanced partitions) we find αc=1/2\alpha_c=1/2. Moreover, we show that the disordered model resulting from hte instance space approach can be viewed as a model of replicators where the random interactions are given by the Hebb rule.Comment: 7 page

Static Correlation and Dynamical Properties of Tb3+-moments in Tb2Ti2O7 -Neutron Scattering Study-

Static and dynamical properties of the magnetic moment system of pyrochlore compound Tb2Ti2O7 with strong magnetic frustration, have been investigated down to the temperature T=0.4 K by neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. The scattering vector (Q)-dependence of the magnetic scattering intensity becomes appreciable with decreasing T at around 30 K, indicating the development of the magnetic correlation. From the observed energy profiles, the elastic, quasi elastic and inelastic components have been separately obtained. The quasi elastic component corresponds to the diffusive motion of the magnetic moments within the lowest states, which are formed of the lowest energy levels of Tb3+ ions. Magnetic correlation pattern which can roughly reproduce the Q-dependence of the scattering intensities of the elastic and quasi elastic component is discussed based on the trial calculations for clusters of 7 moments belonging to two corner-sharing tetrahedra. A possible origin of the glassy state, which develops at around 1.5 K with decreasing T is discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 71(2002)No.2 59
